Dear friend,
Like many other married couples we dreamed of becoming parents and the longer we were married the greater that desire grew. At first we thought of the traditional way in which children would come into our lives because that’s what we knew growing up; a man and a woman meet, they fall in love, they get married, and then a baby grows in mommy’s tummy. But clearly not all tummies are created equal, and even though it’s disheartening, we knew the Lord would provide a way for us to have a family. As we went about our daily lives we constantly were hearing others talk about great experiences with adoption and we realized the Lord was sending us a message about His plan for us and our family.
We know that adoption may not be the best choice for everyone, and that not every baby would be the best fit for our family and vice versa, but we are confident that we will be right for someone. We don’t know all the thoughts and questions that will come through your mind as you weigh your decision for your child, but allow us to share some of the reasons we may be a good choice for you if you decide to seek adoption. First and most important is that your child will be loved to the point where we will be those “embarrassing parents!” We’re not “gross” but we never hesitate to sneak a hug, kiss, or cuddle no matter where we may be. Our kids will most likely hide in embarrassment, but we can’t help but be affectionate. It still warms our hearts each time we hear how obvious it is to others watching how much we love one another. The funny part is we’re not sure what we’re doing to attract this attention, but if it gives others hope that this kind of love isn’t old fashioned or that it doesn’t die after a few years of marriage then we are glad to help. Our children will learn how to have relationships from us. We want them to know how to treat others well and how they should be treated especially when it comes to marriage and family.
Although we’ve had several fantasies of how much fun it would be to have our own private jet or a house with secret passageways, in our real life we have a modest home. We have never gone without the things that are most important. We work diligently to live within our means and continue to make choices about the things we can do without. We will sacrifice whatever we have to if necessary to make sure that we give your child everything he or she will need. As we both reflected on our childhood memories most of what we cherished was the time we spent with our families. Our families didn’t always do elaborate things, but we loved that there was always time for us to be together in which to make memories. We will take the time to make our own special memories by spending time together as a family and are open to having our child’s birth parents help us create some of those unforgettable moments.
One of our best qualities that keep us going strong is that we don’t take ourselves too seriously. We take care of our adult responsibilities and after that most of the time we want to be more like kids, always wanting to play and enjoy life. Our personalities tend to be on the goofy side so if given the choice of a fancy dinner or Chuck E. Cheese’s, it would be Chuck E. Cheese’s hands down; one can never play enough skee ball! We have a blast chasing each other around the house, tickling each other until it hurts, and what’s life without cold feet wars? We can laugh at ourselves which makes going through the tough and stressful times more bearable. We will be serious when needed, but we hope most of the time our home will be filled with laughter, joy, and silliness.
We wish you well in whatever decision you make and a lifetime of happiness. We also feel it is important that you know how amazing you are to us. We don’t know you personally, but the fact that you are even considering adoption is courageous and is further evidence of the unconditional love you have for your child. We thank you for taking time to get to know us and may God watch over you as you weigh your decision.
With love,
Dave and Rene
